Kochi: It was a noble campaign by the students of a Kochi school that caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who on Sunday made a special mention of them in his speech to the nation.
Students of the St Mary’s School, Chitoor, drew a huge India map by collecting signatures of those willing to donate organs or even just supporting the cause in August last and sent it to the Prime Minister along with suggestions on how to make organ donation effective.
“We’re very happy that the Prime Minister noticed the campaign for a noble cause and hope he will come up with initiatives to make organ donations reach the right people at the right time. It’s a recognition of the hardwork by our children,” said Shajimol K Thomas, Headmistress.
A bitter experience that one of their own schoolmates experienced pushed the students to launch the organ donation campaign with the help of the teachers.
“A girl student of Class 1 was detected with cancer last year. She underwent an operation with all her friends lending her financial and mental support. However, to the shock of the students, the girl had a recurrence of the illness this year. Then the students wanted to help similar patients and focused on the campaign for organ donation. We too supported the cause,” Shajimol said.
On August 11, the students collected signatures of those willing to donate organs or support the cause on a huge paper in the form of the map of India.
Also suggestions like setting up of a specialized wing in hospitals to facilitate organ donation and recognition to donors were prepared and sent to the Prime Minister by post.
