Public Works Department looks to fast-track key Thiruvananthapuram road project
Rs 285 crore has been awarded towards land acquisition and the estimate towards road construction is Rs 75 crore
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Public Works Department aims to complete Karamana-Kaliyyikavila stretch by Nov 30. UDF Government is trying to project it as a prestigious project. Recently surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari announced extending Karamana-Kaliyyikkavila to Vizhinjam port at an estimated Rs 1200 crore.
Initially the deadline for completing the 5.5 km stretch four lane work between Karamana – Kaliyyikkavila was supposed to be completed by Oct. 23. But owing to issues on non availability of gravel when the quarry owners strike was going on, inordinate delay was met.
A senior PWD official told DC that the biggest challenge before them was the re-location of the mosque and tomb which is yet to materialize.
“A high level decision on the re-location of the mosque and tomb will be taken only after the local bodies elections. District Collector has already taken a decision to re-locate it”, said a PWD official.
Currently, Rs 285 crore has been awarded towards land acquisition and the estimate towards road construction is Rs 75 crore. So far 985 buildings have been partially or completely removed and two acres of land has been identified in three different places in adjoining areas.
A sub-way has also been constructed near Nemom School on the way to Pravachambalam. Meanwhile, Government Order (Rt.) No – 5700/15/RD has been released by the revenue department stating that the State Level Empowered Committee has approved the land value for 725. 33 ares (not acres) for the next 6.5 km stretch from Pravachambalam to Vazhimukku.
“It was after the District Level Purchase Committee’s decision to acquire 725.33 ares of land, SLEC approved the decision to sanction Rs 22. 23 lakh per are towards land acquisition for the land owner”, said another PWD official.
The upcoming Pravachambalam – Vazhimukku stretch road construction is estimated at Rs 180 crore which will have an underpass at the busy Balaramapuram Junction.
