Mangaluru: A trivial issue of keeping a salon open took a communal colour, resulting in a law and order problem in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday. The salon was kept open by a man from North India, at Nelyadi in Puttur taluk, about 70 km from Mangaluru.

A group of salon workers and owners, accompanied by right wing activists, demanded that the shop owner down the shutters (as the community does not work on Tuesdays). When he refused, they allegedly assaulted him.

In retaliation, some members from the salon owner’s community attacked a right wing leader. The two groups were getting ready for clashes when the police resorted to a mild lathicharge and dispersed them.
