Supreme Court seeks help to treat Muslim women equally
The bench issued notice seeking assistance to ensure Muslim women are treated on par
New Delhi: Expressing serious concern over discrimination meted out to Muslim women who face arbitrary divorce, a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court has called for re-visiting the Shah Bano judgement to ensure formulation of a uniform civil code.
A bench of Justices Anil R. Dave and A.K. Goel said that arbitrary divorces and second marriages denied Muslim women dignity and security and said there was no reason as to why they should be subjected to gender discrimination despite the constitutional guarantee of equality to women under our Constitution.
The Bench issued notice to the Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi seeking his assistance to ensure that Muslim women are treated on par with women of other religions in the country.
