30-year-old woman immolates herself, husband critical
The incident took place at around 12.30 am after Divya picked up a quarrel with her husband
Bengaluru: A 30-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze, while her husband, who tried to rescue her, sustained severe burns at their residence in Mariyappanapalya in Kumbalgodu in Ramanagar Bengaluru Rural early on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred over a domestic row, the police said.
Divya Jyothi and Virendra, who got married seven years ago, worked in a government factory in Rajagopalnagar. The couple has two children, the police said.
The incident took place around 12.30 am after Divya picked up a quarrel with Virendra after the couple returned home. Soon, a heated argument ensued and in a fit of rage, Divya grabbed kerosene kept in the kitchen, doused herself and lit herself. Virendra, who saw this, rushed to save her and sustained severe burns.
The police said that the children were at their grandparent’s house in Peenya when the incident occurred. Noticing the commotion, the neighbours rushed to the couple’s house and shifted them to Victoria Hospital, where Divya was declared brought dead, while Virendra is undergoing treatment.
Kumbalgodu police have registered a case of unnatural death and are probing further.
