Chennai: Contract workers of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation on Wednesday staged a road roko across the state seeking regularisation of their jobs and festival bonus. As many as 8,000 workers across the state including 1,700 from the city took part in the road roko said Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees president K. Vijayan.

“We have been demanded the management to identify the contract workers and regularise their jobs. We are also demanding payment of bonus and ex gratia to the contract workers on par with the regular employees,” he demanded. At least, the Tangedco should ensure payment of daily wage of Rs 250.

With over 35,000 vacant posts and addition of six lakh new service connections every year, Tangedco faces a severe shortage of personnel to attend to the consumer complaints, he said, adding that hence Tangedco local officials themselves are engaging the workers on contract basis without any official sanction. “Such contract workers are not paid any monthly salary. Hence, they take money from consumers for attending to the complaints,” he noted.
