Mysuru: Ahead of Kannada Rajyotsava, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that literateurs should be free from anxiety and the government was making honest efforts to protect their interests. He was speaking at the valedictory function of centenary celebrations of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, here on Friday.
He said, “We understand that the attack on Mr Kalburgi has created anxiety in the literary world. There should not be any restraint to freedom of speech and expression in democracy. It has been guaranteed in the Constitution. We will take strict action against those who try to curtail it. There should be freedom to express one’s thoughts. We have considered Kalburgi’s death very seriously,” he said. He added, “Culture and literature play an important role in evolution of man. Literature should help develop rational thinking and scientific temper. Any restraint to such a freedom will affect progress. But one should not impose their thoughts on others. We have been contemplating introducing Anti Superstition bill. We are eliciting opinion.” he said.
‘Shorten Naadageethe’ On the occasion, noted litterateur Prof G.S. Siddalingaiah said, “Naada Geethe should be free from additional tones and repetitions of words should be stopped. When the National anthem can be cut short why not Naada geethe? It is sung only a mark of honor to the state. The government should take a firm decision on this,” he said. Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pundaleeka Halambi spoke on the occasion.
