CHENNAI: Elected members, including Rajya Sabha MPs from Tamil Nadu, are unhappy with the maintenance of Chennai airport, admitted civil aviation minister Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju. The minister who visited Chennai airport for a brief stop over to attend a private function at Nellore told DC that the situation in Chennai airport has to improve and “if they (Chennai airport authorities) can do it then it should not be a problem”, he said.

Reacting to a query  that Chennai airport was listed as the seventh worst airport in Asia by a travel website - The Guide to Sleeping in Airports - when it comes to maintenance and sanitation, the minister replied, “That’s exactly where they have to pull up their socks. The consumer or the air traveller is not taking shoddy service anymore.”

Raju admitted that maintenance in Chennai airport needs an improvement. It may be recalled here that earlier in September  Raju had himself described the quality of construction of Chennai airport as “shoddy”. Raju also expressed concern over the suicide of a 27-year-old CISF constable at the city airport on Thursday. On privatisation, Raju said if people start working as a team delivering the best,  then no privatisation will happen.
