Beijing trampling human rights, destroying ecology of Tibet
Tibetan support groups deliberate to strengthen movement in India at 5th conference
Guwahati: The 5th All India Tibet Support Groups conference, scheduled to begin here on Monday is going to discuss excessive exploitation of Tibetan natural resources by China and precarious Indo-China bilateral relations.
The conference that will be attended by over 180 representatives of various Tibetan Support Groups will deliberate, discuss and strategise on strengthening the Tibetan movement and support groups in India for a peaceful solution of the Tibet issue.
The chairman of the organising committee Mr R. K. Khirmey, told reporters that the purpose of the conference is to highlight the 'ever-growing repressive implementation of Chinese policies and the worsening situation of human rights situation inside Tibet.'
He said excessive exploitation of Tibetan natural resources and environmental destruction by China has caused a serious threat to the global ecology, particularly of Asia.
“In the 1960s, there were only a dozen dams. But now there are more than 22,000 hydro-electric projects and dams. Tibet is the Third Pole of the world and it provides water to 3.1 billion people in India, China, Bangladesh and other countries. Of the 46,000 glaciers extended over 1.5 lakh sq metres, 8,740 have melted and transformed into lakes because of Chinese destruction,” Mr Khirmey said.
He claimed that 204 lakes are in grave danger of bursting which may prove disastrous for India. He also held China's individualistic approach for excessive flooding in the Brahmaputra.
He said that the conference would also focus on the "intense security relation" between India and China keeping in view Tibet's vital existence.
“Despite India's regard to bilateral ties, China has tried every effort to derail the virtues of this relationship with countless incursions in recent times,” he regretted. Dr Lobsang Sangay will be the special guest at the event, which will also highlight the Tibetan history and cultural ties with India. The Tibet Support Groups has hosted the conference at Guwahati also to celebrate the 80th birthday of his holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama.(EOM)
