Hyderabad: The Telangana state government is mulling a centralised faculty recruitment system for state universities whereby the government or an allied body will hire faculty.

This new process is intended to be a part of the Common Universities Act which is under preparation. However, officials said it may not cut ice with the varsities. Currently, each university hires its own faculty after taking permission from the government.

Education ministry principal secretary Ranjeev Acharya has advocated the changed system. She recently told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD that there should be centralised recruitment of faculty in universities to maintain high standards and evolve a common criteria.

However, a senior officials of the TSCHE said: “Common recruitment system is one idea which we are thinking about. The government or a body like the TSPSC can hold recruitments at once or on need basis.”

The government is critical of the way contract appointments have been made on their own by universities. But officials themselves admit the idea may not cut ice with individual universities. Officials say the move infringes on the autonomy of varsities.

State universities have nearly 1,400 vacant positions of professors, associate and assistant professors. Varsities are staring at a crunch of professors in the next two to three years. The government has asked varsities to submit their individual faculty requirements.
