Chennai: Accusing the Congress of focusing only on its leaders, minister of state in Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh said the Congress was Indira Gandhi family centric and seldom observed the anniversaries of other national leaders.
Indicating that Congress party leaders had scant regard for towering national personalities like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Singh, while justifying the BJP Government’s decision to observe Patel’s birth anniversary by organising the ‘Run For Unity,’ said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the contrary, respected all leaders. “Our PM respects all leaders, including Indira Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This is why we are celebrating the Run for Unity. But the focus of Congress is only the near family members… We are people’s party,” he said praising Modi for taking the initiative.
Addressing a national integration day meeting organised by the State BJP unit at Mudichur in Tambaram here on Saturday evening in connection with the Sardar Va-llabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary, the Minister also claimed that the Iron Man of India was prevented from becoming Prime Minister. “The Congress was keen on perpetrating dynastic rule, but our PM is dispensing people’s rule,” Singh Said.
He lauded state BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan for ensuring a huge turnout at the meeting despite the torrential rain. Though he arrived about three hours late, party members who had gathered in large numbers patiently waited for his arrival and listened to his speech.
Earlier in the day, the BJP organised the Run for Unity on the Marina Beach and the downpour did not make the event a damp squib. Tamilisai flagged off the run. State BJP vice-president M. Chakravarthy and other leaders participated.
