Nuclear Fuel Complex to hire agency

Submission of detailed project report to Centre’s DAE

ONGOLEThe Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), Hyderabad will be engaging an agency to submit a detailed project report (DPR) to the Department of Atomic Energy to get a nod for the NFC to be set up at Orvakal in Kurnool district. 
 
Based on the DPR, the DAE will recommend to the Central government, which will take a final decision to set up the NFC at Orvakal . The state government has already allotted 883.27 acre of land at Orvakal mandal of Kurnool to set up the NFC . The existing NFC in Hyderabad is struggling to supply fuel to the 21 nuclear power plants in the country.
 
Thus the department of Atomic Energy had decided to set up another NFC at Kota in Rajasthan at a cost of Rs 1600 crore, the unit has already got environmental clearance and will be commissioned by 2019. If the central government gives the nod, the country’s third NFC will come up in Orvakal in AP.

AP is turning out to be a major player in supplying nuclear fuel. The Uranium Corporation of India has started uranium mining at Tummalapalle in Kadapa district. The third unit of the Nuclear Fuel Complex at Orvakal in Kurnool district will also supply fuel to nuclear power plants.  The department of atomic minerals has found huge reserves of thorium, which can be processed to make nuclear fuel,
