Hyderabad: Senior police officials from the city have disagreed with the High Court direction on rummy, the card game, and say that it does have elements of gambling. While welcoming the SC order to install CCTV cameras in clubs, cops also say they will continue to raid gambling dens where games like teen patti are played.

“The main issue is that huge money is involved in games of rummy in city clubs. Courts, including the Supreme Court, have said rummy is a game of skill. However, nobody can win rummy with just skill. Players need luck too,” said a senior police official from the Hyderabad Commissionerate.

“The court’s observation about skill is true. But the court ignored the fact that each player has to pick cards from a well shuffled deck, which makes one part of the game based on chances or luck,” said the officer. The first order legalising rummy in India came from Supreme Court in 1968; this year too the SC has issued a favourable judgment on rummy.  Other courts like the Madras High Court and Hyderabad High Court have reinstated the Supreme Court order.

Senior cops added that for other card games, which come under gambling, raids will be conducted. “Under Sections 5 and 9 of the AP Gaming Act, 1974, we have to raid the places if we receive tip offs about gambling,” said the senior official.
