Bengaluru: It’s not just bacteria, allergic reactions, pollution or hormonal changes that can cause skin disorders. Stress can also produce the same effect. “A majority of skin diseases are psychosomatic. Strangely, mental health is an often-overlooked contributing factor,” says Dr Sachit Abraham, Consultant Dermatologist at Manipal Hospital. He treats 25-50 patients a week, suffering from mild to severe psoriasis.
“Psoriasis, Lichen planus, eczema, Seborrheic dermatitis, Rosacea, urticaria and dandruff on the scalp or skin and a host of other skin ailments are triggered by emotional stress. Yet patients generally look for a solution in the form of creams or surgeries.,” explains Dr Sachit. He adds that most of those afflicted by these skin ailments are from the younger age group. “Many youngsters are stressed because of work.”
“Patients have a genetic tendency towards these disorders or these diseases, but they need to have something to switch that gene on and that triggering factor could be stress,” says Dr Sachit, adding, “The patient has to control the trigger. Relying on medicines won’t work.” The solution? “They need to manage stress levels. Such patients need to exercise, and to cultivate a hobby to relax.”
