Designing an entire world of fascinating yet powerful characters that comes alive on silver screen, Sethu Sivanandan creates illustrations of heroes through what seems to be effortless hand drawing. He is the man behind the artistic illustrations in many Malayalam films such as Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi, Pathemari, Rudrasimhasanam, KL 10 Pathu, Adi Kapyare Koottamani, Valliyum Thetti Pulliyum Thetti, Dharboni, Pareethu pandari, Badhal and Priyamanasam (Sanskrit movie).

Hailing from Kayamkulam, Sethu completed his bachelor degree in Fine Arts from the Raja Ravi Varma College of Fine Arts, Mavelikkara. Passionate about artworks, along with his friends Gokul Raj and Vicky, he co-founded the start-up Paper Clown in Kakkanad.

Making his debut for the artistic illustrations in Santhosh Souparnika’s Ardhanaari in 2012, he has worked along with noted make-up artists Pattanam Rasheed and Ronex Xavier.
“After being briefed about the character, the period and the situation, I draw illustrations on the character. Referring to the drawings, makeup artists work on the actors,” says the 27-year -old. His illustrations are primarily based on Concept Art that enables him to use his imagination in capturing the charisma and even the finest detail of the protagonist.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work with the best in the Malayalam film industry. I enjoyed a lot while working for Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi as special effects provided more room for creativity. We created a few moulds for the characters, enriching the movie further,” he says.

Sethu’s works make everything seem possible. Just look at his sketches and you will know why. The characters look so realistic that the sketches draw you to a completely different world. “It takes about 10-20 minutes to do a simple illustration, but when it comes to detailed and major projects such as movie characters, it will go up to two days. Sketches are made using charcoal pencils and after suggestions from the makeup artist and the director, necessary changes are made.”
He is currently working on the illustrations of a new film starring Swetha Menon and is simultaneously working on hosting his own exhibition in Delhi.
