Thiruvananthapuram: The administration committee under the City Corporation has decided to execute the abattoir project on an annuity basis for 10 years.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 20 crore and the proposal would be finalised on Friday and submitted to the state government after meeting with Raiba Industries – a Maharasthra based company – which took part in the expression of interest invited by the civic body.

According to sources, the meeting would be crucial as the civic body does not have funds for executing the project. Rs  15 crores allotted by the Centre for setting up a modern slaughter house lapsed as the civic authorities failed to claim the funds on time.

“The meet would decide the fate of the project. We do not have the funds to execute the project and hence we are putting forward this plan to implement the project on an annuity basis. The company would have to invest and the civic body would pay back the amount within a period of 10 years. We hope the meeting would help reach a consensus with the company. Else we would have to float expression of interest yet again,” said a top official.

The company had agreed to set up the abattoir within eight months. “Slaughtering will be fully mechanised and there will not be any foul smell. Facilities will be in place to convert slaughter waste into other byproducts. The abattoir would be a major revenue generating asset for the Corporation. The work order would be issued once the new council comes into power,” said the official.
