8-hour power outage in East Bengaluru
East and South East Bengaluru experienced power outages for eight hours on Saturday due to maintenance works
Bengaluru: Several areas in the East and South East Bengaluru experienced power outages for eight hours on Saturday due to maintenance works carried out by Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom).
The quarterly maintenance work was carried out at all station equipment of the 220 KV HAL Nimhans receiving station coming under the 400 KV Hoody station. Due to this there was power outage in over 100 areas in and around east and south east parts of the city.
Maintenance works were carried out in Domlur, Indiranagar, HAL, Viveknagar, K.R. Colony, Kodihalli, Bagamane Tech Park, G.M. Palya, Koramangala, Nagasandra, New and Old Tippasandra, ISRO Quarters, ESI Hospital, BEML, L.B. Shastri Nagar, Marathahalli, Sanjay Nagar, LRDE Layout, Doddanekundi, Panathur, Kadubisanahalli, HAL Air port road, Manipal Hospital, and other surrounding areas.
The time of scheduled power outage that the Bescom stated in their website was for eight hours starting from 9 a.m. to 5 pm, but in some areas it even extended until 6.30 pm. “Undertaking maintenance work of a 220-KV receiving station is a major task and as the Bescom had already informed it prior as a scheduled outage, they cannot be legally questioned as the law does not specify the notice period. The law only says that the consumers have to be informed,” said Prabhakar, energy expert, FKCCI.
“If the scheduled outage goes beyond 12 hours, every consumer should be compensated at the rate of Rs 50 for the failure in restoring the power supply within the prescribed time limit, but in this case they are well within their limits,” Prabhakar added.
