BJP misses majority by 3 seats in municipality
Of the seven municipalities, the UDF won two and the LDF got just one
Palakkad: The BJP has emerged as the single largest party in Palakkad municipality by winning 24 seats missing the majority by just three seats. The LDF clinched the district panchayat elections by grabbing 27 of the 30 seats.
Of the seven municipalities, the UDF won two and the LDF got just one. The UDF got the newly-formed Pattambi. No front could get majority in Ottapalam, Mannarkad, Cherpulassery and Palakakd municipalities.
Interestingly, the LDF came third in Palakkad municipality where Mr M.B. Rajesh led by 2800 votes in the 2014 polls.
“We failed to improve from the last local body polls. It was a different political scenario during the parliamentary elections,” said Mr Rajesh.
The BJP won 24 seats compared to the 15 in the last polls. Its candidate defeated the sitting CPM chairman of the municipality S. Krishnadas.
CPM vice- chairman Jaya also lost to KPCC secretary V.K. Sreekantan by 321 votes, the highest in the municipality.
In the Chittur-Thattamangalam municipality, the LDF made a huge impact by winning 11 seats as against the UDF’s 18.
The LDF won 11 out of the 13 block panchayats in the district and won most of the panchayats in the district.
