SRM University seeks Rs 100 crore fund for research

The university looks forward to strengthen ties with Andhra Pradesh government

Chennai: Chennai based SRM University plans to do more research and get a total funding of Rs 100 crore from various funding agencies. The university has also created a fund for academic excellence and aims to raise Rs 100 crore for it in five years.

The university had been receiving research grants from various government agencies such as department of science & technology (DST) and department of biotechnology (DBT) for over Rs 70 crore,

R.P. Sathyanarayanan, president, SRM University, said while delivering the welcome address during the university’s 11th convocation on Saturday. “With a lot of research happening in the university, the research grant may reach Rs 100 crore in the coming days,” he said.

The university looks forward to strengthen ties with Andhra Pradesh government and extend cooperation to the state for education, Sathyanarayanan said. While presenting university’s annual report, vice-chancellor Prabir K. Bagchi, announced creation of fund for academic excellence and raise funds to the tune of Rs 100 crore in five years’ time.

“We will use this fund for endowment chair and to bring scholars to our university from across the world,” he said. Earlier, Prof. Narayana Rao, director (research) at SRM University made a presentation to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu about various research projects undertaken by the university.

During the convocation, the university awarded degrees to 10,639 candidates, including 7,559 UG, 3,017 PG and 63 Ph.D degrees.
