THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Though the LDF became the single largest party in the city corporation, all the major leaders of the front were mauled. CPM secretariat member Jayan Babu,  who was projected as the mayor candidate,  lost from Pangode ward.

In Vattiyoorkavu ward,  CPM district committee member K.C. Vikraman was defeated while Mr Karamana Hari, CPM district committee member, was thrown out  in Karamana ward.

These candidates were fielded as a back-up to the post of mayor in case  Mr Babu failed. The  BJP candidates won from these wards  where the Congress was relegated to the third position.

In Cheruvakkal,  CPM’s senior leader V.S. Padmakumar,  who was a standing committee chairman in the corporation, came third.  The Congress won from there.

Similarly, Mr  Chalai Mohanan of the CPM, who had won Chalai ward  five times in the past,  lost  to the BJP. However, there was some solace to  the LDF as two of their standing committee chairpersons won  the elections.

Ms S. Puspalatha,   a CPM district committee member, won from Nedunkadu while Mr Palayalam Rajan of the NCP won from Nanthancode.
