Hyderabad: “Keep calm and say no to crackers”; “celebrate Diwali as the festival of lights rather than smoke and sound”. These SMSes are being received by many people in Hyderabad from the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) ahead of Diwali.

The TSPCB will be monitoring the various air pollution parameters and also noise pollution levels in Hyderabad on the day of Diwali. It conducted a test on November 5 and will be bringing out a “before and after Diwali” picture of the environment in the city.

It has also started various campaigns to spread awareness among people to avoid bursting of fire crackers through messages on sky balloons at Necklace Road and displaying banners at traffic junctions and major public places on the impacts of fire crackers on environment.

The Andhra Pradesh government has also issued an advisory on the ill effects of fireworks and is encouraging restraint and responsible use. Both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are taking steps to spread awareness on the Supreme Court’s directions on not bursting crackers before 6pm and after 10pm. Andhra Pradesh government has directed district collectors to give wide publicity on the Supreme Court guidelines along with the dos and don'ts of fire cracker usage.
