Bengaluru: Diwali to be rained in, showers to continue
Bengalureans are likely to have their Diwali plans rained on
Bengaluru: Bengalureans are likely to have their Diwali plans rained on, quite literally, as a deep depression off the southwest coast of the Bay of Bengal (40 km off the Puducherry coast) will bring up to four more days of heavy rainfall across the state. The period between October and December is referred to as the north-east Monsoon over peninsular India and the ongoing spurt of rain is not entirely uncommon.
“The depression is likely to cross to Puducherry and Cuddalore, because of which there will be two more days of heavy rains in South India,” said Mr Ramesh, Meteorologist, Bengaluru Met Department. “The first two days have been marked by isolated rainfall that increased in intensity,” he explained. “The third day will be widespread and the rain will decrease by November 15,” he said.
Areas along the Karnataka coast have received scattered rainfall over the first two days, while the last three will see widespread distribution, he said. “In Bengaluru, the rain is widespread because the depression is moving towards the city and the southern-interior Karnataka. That’s why the intensity of the rainfall has increased even from morning to evening.”
It’s damp biz for shopkeepers in city
Cracker sellers across the city were a worried lot due to the continuous rain which has played a spoilt sport and affected cracker sales. According to them, there are few buyers this year as compared to last year. Rajeev K from Sri Lakshmi Priya Traders at Hosur Road said, “The rain has totally spoiled our business this time. We have not even seen sales close to 25 percent of last year. If this weather continues on Tuesday, it is going to be a total loss.”
Voicing a similar opinion, Gokul, a shopkeeper from a cracker shop at Hosur Road said, “Every year, people flock here before the Diwali to buy crackers. There is traffic jams and no space for parking. This time the jams are because of the rain or people heading out of the city and not because of people coming here to buy crackers. There is a difference of 40 percent in our sales this year.”
