Tamil Nadu reels under monsoon fury

60 people dead since Tuesday, More than 29,000 evacuated

CHENNAILife in Northern Tamil Nadu virtually came to a standstill as the north-east monsoon lashed the region with Cuddalore bearing the brunt of the damage. More than 29,000 people affected by the rain were evacuated to safer places in Cuddalore district. Since Tuesday, more than 60 people have died, including 20 in Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai districts. 
 
Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who conducted a high-level meeting on monsoon and disaster management arrangements at the Secretariat Wednesday, said Tamil Nadu in the past three days alone had received 300 mm of rainfall whereas the state’s average monsoon rainfall was 440 mm. 
 
To take precautions against electrocution and to restore power supply, more than 2,000 staff from Tamil Nadu Electricity Board have been dispatched to places around the state Power was restored in 430 villages of the total 683 villages that plunged into darkness during the rains.  As water levels rose across the region, fresh flood alerts were sounded. 
 
Krishnagiri district administration on Wednesday was on high alert as the entire district received more than 130 mm of rain in the past one week, surpassing the annual average rainfall for the season.
