Kochi: A section of Congress rank and file in the city is up in arms against the move to foist a political green horn as the Kochi mayor and is planning to approach the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee against the move.

First-time councilor Shiny Mathew, wife of an NRI businessman, with no political experience emerged as the front runner for the coveted post on account of money power, they allege.
“Ms Mathew was not even a resident of Kochi till recently,” said a senior UDF leader, who preferred anonymity. “The family members enrolled their names on the voters list only in the last supplementary stage,” he added.

A decision on mayoral candidate for the corporation is expected to be finalised on November 16 by a committee comprising MLAs Hibi Eden, Dominic Presentation, K. Babu, Benny Behanan, GCDA chairman N. Venugopal, ex-mayor Tony Chammany and T.J. Vinod, a senior councilor.

The committee will meet only after two-day meeting of the KPCC in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday and Thursday to review the civic poll results, said a leader. “The KPCC meeting will be followed by the district level committee formed for taking a decision on various positions in the corporation,” he said but declined to comment on allegations of financial transactions for the post of Kochi mayor.
