KOLLAM: The fate of Paripally ESI medical college is uncertain with the government failing to make its stand on takeover conditions clear after the Centre dissenting.

Trade unions are jointly launching an indefinite protest before it from Friday to protect benefits the ESI corporation gave them.

The namesake medical college was inaugurated on December 21, 2013, even without the medical council of India approval. The BJP government later dropped the project.

Trade unions protested and put pressure on the state government which finally took over the hospital in March this year. However, it lacked clarity on providing benefits to the ESI cardholders.

Major trade unions approached the court seeking a stay, ironically, while the takeover process was nearing completion. They now say the medical college is necessary but it should be run by the ESI corporation.

N.K. Premachandran MP said the employees would be given free treatment and 35 MBBS seats would be reserved for their children at a low fee of  '24,000.
