When singer Prashanthini, daughter of the late ace singer-actor Malaysia Vasudevan started her career as a playback singer, she never thought she would become a music director in the future. Prashanthini has been roped in to compose music for an untitled film directed by debutant Kevin, who has assisted directors Gautham Menon and Kathir. “I compose jingles, and they heard some of the songs I had composed. They liked them very much because of the tunes. That’s how this opportunity came my way,” she tells DC. Music for films is all about the variety that a composer brings to the table and each composer possesses his own strength. I hope I have given my best for the film,” says Prashanthini, whose vocals include hits like Mundhinam Parthene and Ennamo Yedho. Speaking about the film, she says, it’s a full-on love story set in the milieu of Ooty — “Songs are soft-paced mostly. There are five songs in the film and I have completed three of them. I have recorded them in my voice, but now have to think about who to rope in for the final product.”
So, what is her father’s role in his career? “His contribution in my career cannot be put into words. I was lucky to have him expose me to veterans. He gave me the right training that helped me understand the whole process of music. I have seen him work with the best composers like Raja sir,” she smiles.
Talking about her future plans, Prashanthini says she loves to make music that sells, “My music is more instinctive. Today’s film music emphasises more on rhythm, beat, melody and lyrics. My tunes will be a fine mix all these components.” Meanwhile, a little birdie tells us that she's also in talks to compose another film, which will star a top hero!
