Denied leave, police constable committed suicide: Family
They alleged that the police department was trying to cover up the case
BELAGAVI: The death of a police constable, Jagadish Tukkannavar, attached to Khadebazaar Police Station here two days ago has shocked his family members. While they allege that he committed suicide after he was denied leave, the police contend that he was facing family problems. Tukkannavar, who hails from Gokak district, committed suicide a day after he had applied for a 30-day leave.
According to Khadebazaar station Inspector U.H. Satenahalli, since he had the authority to grant only short duration leave to his subordinates, Tukkannavar had approached the Belagavi Police Commissioner. His leave letter was submitted to the concerned section, but it was not sanctioned. He suspected that the constable might have had family problems, which forced him to end his life.
However, sources refuted this allegation and said that Tukkannavar was happily married and had no family problems. He was posted to the Khadebazaar station a year ago and was well known for his courteous behaviour. They alleged that the police department was trying to cover up the case.
The constable had sent his wife and kid to Gokak for a wedding in his family and had assured them that he would attend the function after taking leave from November 20 onwards. He has been trying to get the leave sanctioned, but failed to get any response from his higher ups and the Commissioner. Sources said he had personally visited the Commissioner’s office to speed up the process, but was upset over the delay.
