A pretty girl dressed in blue, singing in her mellifluous voice and the wind ruffling her hair — this is the first thing you’ll notice when you see the Neeyum Naanum/ Un Vizhigalil cover. Vishnupriya Ravi, who debuted as a playback singer with a song from Vallavanukku Pullum Ayudham, has come a long way since then, but remains a down-to-earth Chennai ponnu. Being a believer in independent music, she, along with Sudharshan Ashok (vocals), Shravan Sridhar (violin) and Anish Mohan (keyboard), released this cover last night on You Tube in order to explore a new side of music, and to see what it felt like to collaborate with other artists.

“I am a thoroughbred Chennaiite — I studied in PS Senior School and then MOP Vaishnav College. I used to sing in competitions and cultural fests, but never knew I would be a professional singer,” she says. “Just playback singing is never enough, I want to be an all-round musician. This means I’ll need to develop a sound knowledge of music, and first and foremost be a great performer,” she adds.

She, along with Sudharshan wanted to make a cover dedicated to the rising youth sensation Anirudh Ravichander, by mixing two of his hit songs — “We decided to do a medley of Neeyum Naanum from Naanum Rowdy Than and Un Vizhigalil from Maan Karate, because they’re just so beautiful to sing and the viewers can connect with them,” she says adding, “We chose to make this cover because independent music gives us the scope to explore various genres of music. We have a greater level of freedom to experiment, unlike in playback singing, where one has to go with the music director’s instructions,” explains Vishnupriya.

As for choosing YouTube as a medium, she says, “It is one of the best platforms for upcoming artistes like me to get recognition and attention. In fact, even though I had sung in two or three films, nobody knew me because they couldn’t put a face to me. However, this single has already garnered 10, 000 views in the last 24 hours and that’s the best encouragement for us,” she says. Working on this collaboration has exposed her to many new styles of singing, interactions and inputs from other musicians and of course, a lot of fun while shooting and recording! “Soulful music makes me feel at peace when I’m singing. I am happy that I got to work with such young
talents; in fact we’re planning to bring out many more covers together soon,” she concludes.
