Demure to uber chic

It is the quality of roles that decide the calibre of an actor than their number. By that yardstick, Anumol has left a lasting impression in the minds of the audience by portraying strong and intense roles in films like Chayilyam, Ivan Megharoopan, Akam and Vedivazhipadu. Though her roles have been diverse, her appearances in a saree or a traditional outfit have largely remained unchanged. But that too will undergo a change and it is something that Anumol herself has been waiting for.

Without hiding her excitement, Anumol gushes, “I am doing a guest role in V.K. Prakash’s Rockstar and I play a fashion photographer in the film. Though the audience is used to seeing me in traditional outfits, here I am going all out with the glamour quotient. I will be wearing all kinds of modern dresses including shorts!”

Playing the role of a fashion photographer has given me the liberty to experiment with my looks and clothes. Actually I was reaching a point where I was beginning to doubt if I could carry off glamorous costumes and this role came at that right moment! VKP is the right kind of director who allows you to experiment so I accepted the role happily.”

The Tamil remake of Shutter titled Oru Naal Iravil is waiting in the wings for its release and this was a role that gave Anumol sleepless nights. She explains, “I am playing the role of the prostitute done by Sajitha Madathil in the original and I was really nervous but it was Sajitha who gave me the courage to go for it! Sajitha is an experienced actress who has a theatre background and has won a State award and there are bound to be comparisons when you reprise a role done by an experienced actress. I just want my audience to see my performance and rate my acting without any comparisons. Right from the start of my career I have been receiving good roles and when this role came to me it was also a personal challenge for me as an actor.”  

Interestingly, Anumol will be playing the roles of an endosulfan activist as well as an endosulfan victim in her upcoming films Valliya Chirakulla Pakshikal and Amoeba respectively. She speaks about this unique contrast, “In Amoeba I play a mother whose child is afflicted by the ill effects of endosulfan poisoning and it is more about the mental anguish and turmoil than physical. In VCP, I play an activist and I interacted with the real victims of endosulfan.”  Other than films, Anumol is also busy with her classical dance stage performances in Mohiniattam and Kathakali.
