City gets 125 mm in 12 hours on Sunday
Chennai: It’s raining cats and dogs. The coastal districts continued to get pounded and Chennai city recorded 125 mm of rainfall in just 12 hours on Sunday. The Adyar river was in spate and a teenager who was washed away in the strong currents near Kasi theatre was not traceable till late in the day and is feared to have drowned.
Going by Met office predictions, the low pressure system is likely to intensify and bring more rain in next couple of days. Met officials have confirmed that a well marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka persists. It is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu coast and may concentrate into a depression on Monday.
The Meenambakkam weather station recorded 170 mm, Hindustan University received 216 mm and the entire stretch of OMR like Kelambakkam is left flooded. Likewise, Puzhal recorded 175 mm, Taramani 149 mm, Poonamale 121 mm and Anna University 126 mm. All this between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm on Sunday.
The Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts continue to received heavy rains with Anaikaranchatram in Nagapattinam recording 180 mm, while Sirkali received 170 mm of overnight rains on Sunday.
