25 year old woman commits suicide
Soon after marriage, Varsha started complaining of dowry harassment
Hyderabad: A 25-year-contract employee at DRDO allegedly committed suicide on Monday morning by hanging herself due to harassment from her husband and in-laws for extra dowry.
M. Varsha hanged herself with a dupatta while her in-laws’ were at home. Her parents alleged that there were injuries on her body and that she had been killed by her husband's family.
Varsha, who had completed her engineering in 2011, had been working in DRDO for nearly three years. She had married Mr Ranjith Goud, a Railway employee, in March 2015.
At that time her parents had given property and jewellery worth around Rs 80 lakh. However Mr Ranjith, who is a junior railway engineer at Kazipet, allegedly demanded more dowry and asked her to bring Rs 10 lakh cash and also documents of the 6-acre agricultural land, which she would inherit from her father.
“They wanted a share of six acre from the agricultural land that my uncle owns in Mahabubnagar and also Rs 10 lakh in cash. However, he assured them that they would discuss it when they came home for Dussehra,” said Varsha’s cousin Mr Venkateshwar Rao, who works in the Agricultural department.
Soon after marriage, Varsha started complaining of dowry harassment, but her parents tried to convince her saying that things would get better slowly.
They had gone to Goa on a Diwali vacation and on Sunday evening at around 5.30 pm, Varsha spoke to her mother and informed her about their return journey. They returned home on Monday morning at around 5 am and an hour later, she allegedly committed suicide in her in-laws’ home. Based on a complaint, a case of dowry death under Section 304(b) has been registered .
