Bengaluru: Woman vendor cheated of Rs 10,000, given fake notes
She gave him 20 Rs 500 notes and waited for him to return with the goods auto
Bengaluru: A 60-year-old woman coconut vendor was tricked by an unidentified man who made away with Rs 10,000 from her on the pretext of taking change for ten Rs 1,000 notes that were counterfeit on Monday night. The incident happened at Rajamandi in Jayanagar around 7.30 pm.
The complainant, Bhagyalakshmi, stated in her police complaint that a well-dressed man, flaunting gold chains and bracelets, came on a two-wheeler to her shop and struck a deal to buy around 400 coconuts. Happy and carried away with the business deal, the woman also offered him a discount as he was taking coconuts in bulk.
He then told the elderly woman that he would go and fetch a goods auto to ferry the coconuts. On his way out, he asked the woman if she had change for Rs 10,000 as he only had 10 Rs 1,000 notes.
She gave him 20 Rs 500 notes and waited for him to return with the goods auto. Hours passed and the customer did not return. In the meantime, the woman’s son came to the shop and suspecting something wrong, took the notes to a financier. That is when he discovered that his mother had been tricked by the fraudster and had been given counterfeit notes.
The victim then lodged a complaint with the police. “We have registered a case and our men are investigating on the case,” said B.S. Lokesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Division.
