Bengaluru: Over 3,000 trained police constables, presently working as orderlies in houses of senior IPS officers have reason to cheer as home minister Dr G Parameshwar is seriously thinking of sending them back to police duty.

“I have observed orderlies takings dogs for a walk, washing clothes, bringing vegetables and dropping children at school. They are trained in policing and utilising them for household works is not at all acceptable,” Dr Parameshwar told DC.

Besides, he said, the use of orderly in the houses of senior police officers was a legacy of the British empire. Now things have changed and such a system should have a place in democracy. Each senior police officer has around four to five orderlies in his/her house doing household works.

"In the first meeting of senior police officers, I have asked about the total number of orderlies working in their houses. I am checking the availability of funds to see whether is it possible to post non-police personnel for household work of police officers and judges. I am re-visiting the issue to do justice to them. I am in favour of deploying them back in the police force in view of shortage of staff".

On traffic problems, he he said he was thinking of using the services of civil society to address them. There were cities with more vehicles than Bengaluru city but traffic snarls occur rarely. However, traffic chaos had become order of the day in the city with the vehicle population touching 65 lakh. Members of civil society who were experts in various fields, would be consulted to suggest remedies to do away with traffic snarls.

He said he has asked senior traffic cops to be on roads during morning and evening to streamline traffic in Bengaluru. A road map is being prepared to address traffic problems in the state capital.
