Madras High Court
ChennaiThe Madras high court has directed the Election Commission to submit a feasibility report on removing anomalies in the electoral roll. Justice M.M. Sundresh before whom a petition filed by DMK leader R.S. Bharathi came up for hearing, has directed the Election Commission and State Election Commission to file the report.

The petitioner alleged that irregularities had been committed during the enumeration of voter list. While there was mention about the name of the voter, his father’s name, street and the district/town in the list, door number was not found in the list.

Thus, it is practically impossible to verify the bogus/cross voting by political parties during election. Therefore, it would be appropriate if the door numbers are given along with particulars already given.

Counsel for EC submitted that the practice already in vogue has been followed. On the request of petitioner, door number has been put up in a dynamic page of website of the commission and the petitioner can upload it.

Counsel for the petitioner refuted it stating it is practically impossible to do so at every district /booth level. The judge said “After all, the role of Election Commission is to conduct a free and fair election. Thus, all the procedures contemplated and adopted are meant for the purpose. There is no restriction on the procedures to be followed keeping in mind   the object and ratio behind it”.

Therefore, the judge directed the election commission to inform the court about the feasibility of including door number in the list furnished/to be furnished at booth level as there is still sufficient time.
