Left Democratic Front gets 5 mayors, bags Kannur too

Both the fronts had 27 members each in the 55-member council

Kochi: The Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Wednesday got a bonus point in the electoral battle for civic bodies by winning the first mayoral election in Kannur, apart from winning the top posts in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur and Kozhikode corporations. United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Soumini Jain was elected the mayor of Kochi corporation.

The LDF won the elections to the post of municipal chairpersons in 45 municipalities while the UDF won in 35.

The BJP tasted its first victory in the state when party councilor Prameela Sasidharan elected chairperson of the Palakkad municipality. CPM candidate E P Latha declared elected the first Kannur mayor when Congress rebel P K Ragesh voted for her against the party candidate Suma Balakrishnan. Both the fronts had 27 members each in the 55-member council. Independent candidates won in two municipalities.
