Thiruvananthapuram: A group of jail officers have come up with a short film on the reclamation of paddy fields in the state. The film Adivasam is directed by assistant jail officer Ajith Poojappura of the Poojappura central jail here.

Those who acted in the movie included Nettukaltheri Open Jail superintendent Sam Thankkayan and jail employees Najim Kadakkal, Vinod, Somarajan, Sudheesh and Dineshan Nettayam.

Najim Kadakkal has also written the lyrics while Vinod and Somarajan have sung the songs. Mr Ajith told Deccan Chronicle that the film portrayed the angst of those who lost their farms, homes, schools and playgrounds for development projects.

“The film gives an insight into the consequences of paddy field reclamation and deals with the dangers the men's atrocities do to nature,” he said.

The shooting was completed in Parvathipuram in Tamilnadu and Vellayani on the outskirts of the city. The film will be released in January.

Mr Ajith had earlier done a short film Abhyarthi on America’s secret naval base on the Diego Garcia islands in the Indian Ocean, from where Chagossian tribal people were evicted.

The film brought out the pain of the people evicted from their motherland. As the Central government was working on new land reforms policies, he made the film as a tribute to all such people.
