Chennai: A freshly fired 45-cm long rocket shell, from an army training session at Hanumanthapuram in neighbouring Kancheepuram district, fell in nearby village Anjur on Wednesday night causing panic in the neighbourhood.

Villagers saw a ball of fire fall in the middle street of the village and immediately alerted the panchayat chief and police. Police picked up the shell – 84 mm Illuminating FFV 545 – and launched an investigation into the incident which happened around 7.30 pm.

“It looks like the shell fired after illuminating the area fell in the village during training by Army soldiers creating panic among the residents,” police said.

According to the police, the Hanumanthapuram firing range is being used by soldiers from an Army regiment of Bengaluru from November 14 to 20, 2015. As many as 80 Armymen are undergoing training in the facility daily during 5 pm to 8 pm on daily basis.
