Shreyas Iyer – the next big thing in Indian cricket?
Former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar calls him fearless, a match winner
Mumbai: With Team India struggling to find the right combination in ODI and T20 cricket, former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar came up with a suggestion. The one-time destructive batsman touted Shreyas Iyer as the next big thing in Indian cricket.
According to reports, Vengsarkar said that Iyer could be the match winner India need in the limited overs and also termed him fearless.
Iyer broke into the selectors’ books with his domestic cricket performances and even before donning the international cap, he earned the Indian Premier League (IPL) mantle with 2.6 crore.
Representing Delhi Daredevils, the right-hander ended with 439 runs that included four half-centuries.
Mumbai’s chief selector Milind Rege said that Iyer is the second generation to destructive batting, following the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli.
Vengsarkar added that Iyer is not afraid to take on any attack which speaks about the tons of confidence he carries with himself.
Iyer has scored against bowlers across the globe. Within India, he has taken Praveen Kumar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a ride.
Can he fit the Team India bill? It remains to be seen.
