Shrug off your sleeves and bare those shoulders as the off-the-shoulders trend gains momentum not just on the fiery red carpet but off of it too! With all our favourite It-girls pulling it off with elan, this chic, flirty and feminine silhouette is not just for Lady Di or for your average Disney princess. Now, you can pair it with a tea length skirt, figure-fitting trousers, wear it as an eyelet dress or give your traditional wardrobe an update. We’ve got you covered.
“It’s the perfect feminine approach to styling this season and to show off your collar bones,” says Bengaluru designer, Priyanka Ella Lorena Lama about the classy trend. Whether it’s a classic pantsuit like she suggests, a top that can take you from your desk to the bar or a dress that will make you feel like a million bucks, “Baring your shoulders can be apt for any season or occasion,” says Akshita Totlani of Peek-A-Style. This young designer from the city can’t get enough of the look. “A staple black off shoulder top is a must in every girl’s wardrobe. You can pair them with pencil skirts for a formal chic look, or just throw them on with your comfy jeans or shorts, for an everyday affair,” she suggests.
While Madonna rocked the off-shoulder look all through the 80s, this look can be quite tricky. “Go bare shouldered sans any neck pieces,” says Priyanka. “Chunky earrings are a perfect accessory to complete this look. Pair it with a red off shoulder blouse to bring in Christmas and to not make you look like a Christmas tree!” adds Akshita. Another way to ‘shrug it off’ is to follow in the footsteps of Bollywood lasses Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt and to oomph it up with a flared midi skirt. “My favourite pairing would be a ruffled off shoulder crop top worn with a massively pleated midi skirt, or a midi off shoulder dress with pleats,” says Vintage Obsession’s blogger Smrithi Rao, who has looked forward to this trend since Eva Longoria flaunted it ever so often in Desperate Housewives and January Jones aced the look in Mad Men with her flared vintage dresses.
If the fashion weeks across the country are anything to go by, this trend isn’t fated for your Western wardrobe alone. “Off-the-shoulder blouses for lehengas and sarees are a huge hit with brides too as they want to look a little different whilst being trendy,” says Charas’s designer, Sonia Sen whose pieces scorched the Bangalore Fashion Week ramp recently.
Go ala the trend’s face, Sonam Kapoor and give your traditional couture a spin by baring your shoulders. Keep those baubles to a bare minimum, and let your shoulders do the talking.
