Police arrested Huccha Venkat on Friday under SC/ST Atrocities Act
Bengaluru: The West division police arrested cinema actor Huccha Venkat on Friday under SC/ST Atrocities Act and remanded him in judicial custody after being produced before a local court.
According to police, a group of students from the Bangalore University had file a complaint stating that Venkat had made derogatory remarks against Dr Ambedkar in a talk-show, hosted by a vernacular television channel on Wednesday. A large number of students attempted to block the Mysore Road in front of the Bangalore University Gate on Thursday night.
In another protest Dalit activists organised a sit-in protest before the house of Venkat’s sister in Indiranagar. In the talk-show Venkat had said that rapists need to hanged, but when the anchor pointed out that there were no provisions for hanging the rapists in Indian constitution, he made abusive remarks against Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution.
Complaints against the actor have been lodged in many police stations by different groups of people, a police officer said.
