Kozhikode: The Kerala Raj Bhavan on Friday appointed Kerala University Registrar Dr K. Muhammed Basheer as the new vice-chancellor of Calicut University.

The Search Committee appointed by the Governor, who is also the chancellor of the university, had nominated Dr Basheer unanimously on Tuesday.

The order was issued after the Governor held discussions with Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson, who was the government representative and the convener of the Search Committee constituted in July last week.

The Governor’s order was sent to Calicut University VC-in-charge Dr M.K. Abdul Khader and other concerned departments on Friday itself.

Dr Basheer will be the first VC from Malappuram district and Pallikkal Grama Panchayat where the university is headquartered.

He was relieved from the Kerala University on Friday and took charge as the VC from Thiruvananthapuram itself. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dr Basheer said he will arrive on the Thenjippalam campus only on Monday.

“I have to attend a few meetings on Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram. So probably by Monday I would carry out my first visit to the University headquarters as the VC,” he said.

He holds a PhD in Arabic and has 19 years of teaching experience at SS College, Areacode, and EMEA College, Kondotty. He was the principal of Sullamussalam Science College for eight years before being appointed as registrar.
