Only people-oriented polity can bring about development: Brinda Karat

She also expressed happiness that more than 50 per cent of the elected members of the local bodies were women

Thrissur: CPM politburo member Brinda Karat on Friday released the book named Idathottu Eluppavazhiyilla: Indian Communisathinte Bhavi, the Malayalam translation of No free Left: The future of Indian Communism written by prominent journalist Vijay Prashad.
 
At the function held at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Hall here, she said the history of social reforms in Kerala was getting diluted. "In North India, reforms take place through elections. But in Kerala, the renaissance leaders were able to bring about the social reforms and attempts are deliberately made to dilute such reforms. If people have any doubts regarding the future of the Left, they should apprehend that only the people-oriented polity of the Left can bring real development in the country," she said.
 
She also expressed happiness that more than 50 per cent of the elected members of the local bodies were women.
 
Ms Karat handed over a copy of the book to Thrissur mayor Ajitha Jayaraj. district panchayat president Sheela Vijayakumar and Wadakkanchery municipal chairperson Sivapriya Santhosh were also present. The book published by Pratheeksha trust is translated by A Siyavudeen.
