In this BBMP office, when it rains, it pours!

Leaky ceilings, fungus ridden walls make life miserable for staff

Fungus stricken walls of a BBMP office at Malleswaram
Bengaluru: It appears that the BBMP birth and death office and health office at Malleswaram 16th cross, are dying a slow death due to leaking ceilings, fungus-ridden walls and stinking rooms. Even the sub-registrar’s office is functioning from the same premises. Dustbins are being used to collect the dripping water.

Officials are panic stricken about working in a dilapidated building and they have been falling prey to health hazards, including respiratory problems. Besides, these officials have to bear the brunt of curses from public who come to get their work done.

The officials have been dreading working from this office as the ceiling is dripping and  with the damp walls and floors the stench is unbearable. Since the building houses the sub-registrar’s office and birth and death certificate office, hundreds of people frequent the place every day. Repeated complaints to the local MLA and BBMP has fallen on deaf ears, said sources. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle N. Ramamurthy said that the office is in a dilapidated condition and it is impossible to sit in the office when it rains.

Especially since the rain water dripping on the power socket might lead to a short circuit, putting the lives of staff and public in peril. Besides, documents are getting corrupted and services are delayed, he added.

Every time, officials at birth and death and sub registrar’s office are forced to refresh their system to serve the public. Getting any document registered is a bane. How can the government and BBMP allow the public office to function in such a dilapidated building? It is high time that these services should be accommodated in a safe building, said Mr. Ramamurthy.

Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy told Deccan Chronicle that corporators have been directed to focus on repairing buildings, offering public service apart from road and drain works. Special attention will be given to repair the birth and death service building in Malleswaram and the engineer concerned will be directed to fix it at the earliest.
