KOCHI: Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant and its surrounding areas will become stench-free by the second week of December as a result of the ongoing deodorising work.
Dr S.R. Maley, a Mumbai-based scientist and a representative of Ecosystem Services, the company un-dertaking the work, told DC that the plant and its surroundings would be st-ench-free by December 11.
The company began the deodorising a few days ago after a tripartite agreement between the Cochin corporation, Suchitwa Mi-ssion and EcoSave Syste-ms for the waste treatment on the dumping ground.
K. Vasuki, executive dir-ector, Suchitwa Mission, which is overseeing the work, said it was a temporary measure to treat the piled up solid waste.
“The non-biodegradable components including plastic waste are to be dealt using the capping technique, which involves wrapping it in a plastic sheet and burying under the ground,” she said.
She said a permanent solution to the waste problem would be the construction of a new waste-to-energy plant to be built on a public-private-partnership model. It is awaiting the final clearance of the state government.
The ongoing waste treatment is based on a technique to convert biode-gradable waste into organic compost by spraying herbal sanitisers.
“The compost will be sold to recover part of the cost. The Cochin corporation will not incur any expenditure for the waste treatment in the current operation,” she said.
Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson took the initiative for the waste treatment after witnessing the condition prevailing in the old plant.
