Bengaluru: Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwar has lauded Gopalakrishna, a police sub inspector attached to Byatarayanapura Traffic Police Station, for his humanitarian gesture in assisting a pregnant woman give birth while on duty on Thursday.

Police said the Minister personally contacted Gopalakrishna and appreciated him for his act while manning the traffic. The Minister said that Gopalakrishna’s gesture was commendable and needs to be emulated by his colleagues. The Minister lauded him for his presence of mind and resourcefulness and exhorted him to keep up the good work.

While monitoring traffic at the Gali Anjaneya Temple junction on Mysuru Road on Thursday, Gopalakrisha noticed a pregnant woman collapse. He sought the help of a woman pourakarmika and shifted the pregnant woman to an open space.

He contacted 108 Ambulance service but by the time the ambulance arrived, the woman had delivered a baby girl. Later both were shifted to Vanivilas Hospital.

The woman, identified as Selvi, 23, had come to the city from Kallukuchi village in Tamil Nadu. She was married to a construction labourer, who died in an accident recently. Her husband’s family was upset and they sent Selvi unaccompanied to the city to get admitted to a hospital for delivery.

Selvi took a bus to the city and had reached Mysore road when the incident happened.
