Hyderabad: Black, polluted water, floating chunks of discarded package materials, construction debris and half burnt garbage on the shores…nothing stops the various species of waterfowls from visiting the Mondi Kunta lake at Khanamet.
The “lake”, which has a Full Tank Level area of about 6.56 acre has now been reduced to a sewage slush of around 2 acre. The area under MondiKunta’s FTL is filled with large boulders which were blasted on the hillocks to make way for multiple high rise apartments.
A wall runs right through the lakebed which was recently constructed along with a kachha road, to which government authorities have turned a blind eye.
The lake’s shores have become a dumping ground for garbage from some of these apartments and also for synthetic packing material, discarded plastic plates and waste food from the nearby fast food joints, supermarkets and coffee houses. It also acts as a stop for travellers for relieving themselves and as a toilet for nearby slum dwellers.
Retired IPS officer K. Ch Venkata Reddy, who has been fighting for protection of the lake, said, “Many a time we have requested the revenue and municipal authorities to take immediate steps to protect the lake by fencing and beautifying it. I personally contacted the tahsildar of Serilingampally mandal twice but to no avail. Steady encroachments have resulted to the lake’s area shrinking to 60 per cent of its original size. Khanamet has become a prime real estate area but the lake bed lies exposed to land sharks.”
Irrigation and legislative affairs minister T. Harish Rao had visited the lake about six months ago and had promised to beautify it so that it also became an attraction for national and international delegates visiting the HITEX exhibition center, but no works have been grounded yet.
