Why shoot the sparrow?

As Jil Jung Juk’s score continues to intrigue audiences, composer Vishal Chandrasekar tells us what makes him tick

Here’s a man who did something no one could have ever thought of — record veteran actor Radha Ravi rapping! Ever since the audio of Jil Jung Juk released, music composer Vishal Chandrasekar has been the talk of the town owing to the film’s interesting and experimental tracks.

“I never learnt music formally. I grew up listening to rock music and the musical knowledge and the talent I have is completely hearsay,” says Vishal. He is extremely pleased with the reception of Jil Jung Juk’s audio; especially the song Shoot the Kuruvi, which has become a rage amongst youngsters.

The music director owes a lot to actor Siddharth, who came up with the idea for the song. “He (Siddharth) came to me and asked for a song which should be completely gibberish. Throughout the composition, he came up with valuable inputs, which made the song really interesting and peppy.” He also mentions that they initially hadn’t planned to make Radha Ravi sing the hilarious rap bit. “It was only when he was dubbing for his portions, the idea struck and the rest is history,” says Vishal.

Before his foray into mainstream cinema, Vishal initially earned recognition writing music for some acclaimed documentaries like The Perfect Knot and Letters to Dharavi. He is now composing for a yet-to-be-titled Telugu film starring Nani, while taking up another interesting project in Tamil called Agam, which is about knowledge terrorism. Vishal excitedly talks about a gaana song, which he has composed. “The song is about two brothers having an argument; one in support of settling in the US and other about the benefits of working in India. I’m sure it will be a huge hit too!”

When questioned if he can adapt to commercial music anytime soon, he politely refused, saying, “I have always loved trying out different things. My songs will always be experimental even if I compose for mainstream commercial films.”

Finally, he gives his fans some interesting news that a new track, Shoot the kill, for Jil Jung Juk, will be released on December 4. He cheekily concluded, “I am sure this song will spark more debate and we are open to it!”
