KOCHI: The construction of the first four-lane concrete road with white topping in the state is progressing at  a fast pace in the PWD  minister’s constituency in Kalamassery, but not without complaints.

The HMT junction to Manalimukku stretch with several educational institutions and commercial establishments is the busiest route where pedestrian walkway and drainage have not been provided as part of the road works.

The unique road development scheme using white topping is being carried out on a pilot basis at an estimated cost of Rs 21 crore. White topping is a mix of concrete and gravel laid above the tarred surface.

The civic authorities have requested the PWD to provide necessary facilities along the road, including parking space, proper drainage and footpath.

“When developed into a four-lane, the HMT road, which connects with Seaport- Airport Road, Cochin Medical College, big factories, schools and colleges, industrial units and other commercial establishments, vehicle density will increase necessitating pedestrian walkway and parking space. Since the HMT road is a regular water-logging area, proper drainage facility has to be ensured,” said Mr M. Nandakumar, former standing committee chairman, Kalamassery municipality.

The project is being carried out as part of the government’s efforts to use advanced technologies, including white topping, to increase the life of roads.

Meanwhile, PWD executive engineer Jotty P. Thomas said that provision for pedestrian walkway and drainage was  part of the road design. “When the project is completed, facilities will be provided,” he said.
