HASSAN/MYSURU: It is official. JD (S) will contest next month’s elections to the Legislative Council on its own rather than forge an alliance with the ruling Congress.

This decision was confirmed by party patriarch H.D. Deve Gowda and his son and state unit chief H.D. Kumaraswamy on Friday though a couple of JD(S) legislators met Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and spoke to him about the need to arrive at a pre-poll understanding earlier this week. “An alliance for Council polls is a closed chapter.

It is irrelevant,” Mr Gowda told the media at Channarayapatna in Hassan district, adding that the party would announce its list of candidates in consultation with Mr Kumaraswamy and other leaders shortly.

In Mysuru, Mr Kumaraswamy said: “We have discussed the issue with party workers and MLAs from across the state, and none is in favour of the alliance. Only a few MLAs, including Zameer Ahamed Khan and Cheluvarayaswamy, are in favour of the alliance. They are at liberty to express their personal opinion, but not views of the party,” he added.
