He is not adamant in doing protagonist roles only. If the character which comes to him has enough prominence in the film, he is ready to do that, even if it is a supporting role. Arjun Nandhakumar, who mesmerised film buffs in the role of Mark Roshan in Mohanlal-starrer Grand Master, is getting good response for his role in Jayasurya’s Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam.
“Mohan — that is the name of my character in Su Su... — is one of the close friends of Sudhi in his hometown. Sudhi is free to talk to Mohan without any inhibition,” says Arjun, about his role, who is excited to appear in a new avatar through this film.
“It is for the first time in my career that I am essaying a village guy. Though I am hailing from a village — Chennithala in Alappuzha, all the roles I portrayed earlier were of city-based characters.”
“Even when I approached Ranjith Sankar sir for a role in this film, he too had a doubt whether I was fit for a villager’s role. But later, around a month prior to the shoot, he zeroed in on me. As Mohan has out and out desi characteristics, he prefers to wear either mundu or lungi. This is my first role in such costumes,” says the actor.
For Arjun, sharing the screen space with Jayasurya was a great experience. “Jayettan is one of the most brilliant actors I have ever met. As he was portraying a character with a stammer, the timing was a big challenge during the dialogue rendering. He was very supportive and used to give hints with some gestures or facial expressions on when to start my dialogue,” the actor recollects.
So, what are his future plans? “Though I am getting offers to act as a hero, I am not just focusing on merely such projects. If I am getting performance-oriented supporting roles, I am ready to accept that too. The three films in which I have acted this year were hits and I signed those projects just because the roles have importance in the storyline,” says Arjun.
